Alter Aeon April 2025 Update

Happy spring, everyone! Here are our March updates to Alter Aeon: - There have been more refinements with crafting, the biggest being making the various weapon guard types more distinct from one another. - The “compare” command will now accept worn body slot names, for example 'compare ring finger2' or 'compare hat head'. Compare can also now be used to compare object components of the same kind to one another, for example comparing two forged katana blades to see which one has higher stats or quality before assembling a katana. - Items harvested from mobs, such as meat, bones, bottled blood and venom, now remember the mob they came from. This will be used for new job types in the future. Bottled blood shows what race it came from, and venom is specific to the mob. - The intelligence requirement of the ‘ward breaker’ spell has been relaxed to make it more accessible to high level clerics who don’t necessarily have high int. - You can type 'event holiday' to see a list of Alter Aeon's official holidays. Plans for April: - Implementation of the ‘umbral thrall’ skill for level 40 thief. - Releasing the level 40 solo area Usha’s Dream. - Updating content in the southwest of the mainland of Atmir, which will include adding a few new areas to complete the coastline. The goal is to make the entire coastline walkable, or swimmable as the case may be. - Preparing for this year’s Summer Solstice Celebration, which will start in June. Alter Aeon March 2025 Update

First, it is my sad duty to report that one of our senior staff members, Tarrant, passed away on February 22nd after a three and a half year long struggle with cancer. He was a long-time player and contributor to Alter Aeon and will be dearly missed. For more information, please refer to our latest Youtube update (link provided below). We will opening up a memorial to Tarrant in the village of Votara with a bulletin board where those who knew him can leave your thoughts. We also will be designing an annual holiday in his honor to celebrate his life and accomplishments. We had planned on a game-wide event in March (which should be starting soon if not already by the time this is posted). For this event we will be reintroducing the fortuitous notary bonus class first invented for the Summer Solstice celebration a few years ago. The bonus class, which is centered around luck, will be unlocked by gathering shamrocks. All level 40 areas equipment have now been re-leveled. Solo 40 areas should have all equipment be level 38, group 4 areas should be all level 39. and group 7 and up is now all total level 166. New equipment has been added to several areas like the City of Kings, the Disused Fane, The Tombs of the Forgotten, along with the paths around and between these areas. We have also been adding templates and correcting compositions on various objects across the game. The ‘scrap equipment’ skill is due for expansions: if you know the correct skills, you will be able to remove handles and guards from weapons and gemstones from jewelry to get usable (though likely degraded) parts. Encounter mobs will start showing up with auto-generated equipment. This includes several ship boarding encounters. Expect the next Wild Hunt you face to be better armed! Certain harvested items will retain more of the identity of the creature they came from. This is a precursor for some possible new jobs. Improvements are being made to our custom client for players with visual impairments, Mush-Z. There is a new March beta release which in addition to including some bug-fixes, there will be integration for the mud sound protocol (MSP) into the client. This has several benefits: 1. It will help fix some bugs where sounds are misfiring in inappropriate places. 2. Sounds are less likely to stop playing when there is a string change. 3. It can be used to fill in some of the gaps with missing sounds in the Mush-Z sound pack. 4. It will allow builder interactive sounds to be played. This having been said, by far the most exciting advantage of migrating to MSP is that those using the client will will get to choose to experience the superb custom Alter Aeon sounds and music currently enjoyed by users of the dclient, our custom client for sighted players. Alter Aeon February 2025 Update

Happy Valentine’s Day! Alter Aeon has just celebrated its 30th anniversary! Having had continuous development since 1995 by a team of dedicated coders and builders, Alter Aeon has evolved into the beautiful fantasy text game that it is today. For last month’s anniversary event,we introduced a new feature called the Wild Hunt, where players can have random encounters with supernatural creatures in the wilderness at night (but only during the Wild Hunt event). Other things added last month: - Crafted cloaks should now be type ARMOR. - A new tailored item: leg warmers. - The 'event show' command will display information about certain recurring events that you've participated in, such as the Wild Hunt. - Some slight re-balancing for certain natural attacks: ‘bite’ now does pointed and blunt damage, ‘beak’ now does edged and blunt damage, and ‘claw’ now does edged and pointed damage. - The removal of the superfluous sending of “ok” strings from get/put commands. - Fixing a bug which was sending position change notifies for disabled leaderboards. - The keyword “rwood” will now be added to rare wood, provided that the gatherer has adequate knowledge of the ‘woodcraft’ skill. - Adding brag/show support for “woodcount” and “mineralcount”. - Ability to brag to the elder tell channel. - Adjustment of the spam filters for strings sent by the bottling skill and ‘death and decay’ spell. Upcoming updates in February: - For our next system event, Valentine's Day, gatherable roses will be coming online, and they will have a counter attached to them similar to that used for the Wild Hunt. - A new level 45 group 15 area called The Razor Moraines will be released in February, which will be located on the plane of Crepuscula and accessible via the City of Fonts. - A new level 40 area called Usha’s Dream will also be released soon. This will be on the Dream Plane and be portal-linked to Caer Bre’en. - Level 40 area equipment is generally being reworked to be more balanced. New mobs are also being added to these areas in order to give variety and make fame stand out more. - The level 40 thief skill ‘umbral thrall’ should be implemented later this month, with the thrall having full combat capabilities. Once this is done, non-combat routines will be added piecemeal over the next several weeks. Current plans are for the umbral thrall to assist with distract, lockpicking, pickpocketing and stealing, shadow bind, shadow decoy and disarming traps. The Wild Hunt has begun! Log in now to participate in Alter Aeon's 30th anniversary event! Also throughout the remainder of January we will be updating some high level areas: relevelling mobs, upgrading objects, splitting mobs for better xp and the like. Amongst these will be the mirror world connected to Dorna, the desert city of Linholt and the continent of Suboria. Later in the year more will be updated to spread out level and group size distribution.

Alter Aeon January 2025 Update

Alter Aeon is turning thirty years old! We’ve come a long way since our humble start of a smattering of C code that just happened to satisfy the 'senior/graduation project' requirement of a certain electrical engineering student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This student was Dennis Towne, aka Dentin, the creator of Alter Aeon. Dentin has continuously maintained and guided the development of the game over these many years so it could become what it is today. Alter Aeon is a hack-and-slash game in an original fantasy setting. It is a multi-class MUD with six classes: warrior, thief, cleric, mage, necromancer and druid. The commands and culture are very friendly to new players, and the game is well-suited for the visually impaired. Alter Aeon features thousands of quests and tens of thousands of enemies to defeat. The game world is enormous, with dozens of different planes of existence, hundreds of areas and over 60,000 locations to explore! January 15th 1995 is the day that Alter Aeon first went public, and in honor of this momentous occasion we are celebrating with an anniversary game event. In addition to opening up the 1995 port so players can try out Alter Aeon in its original form, we will be introducing a new feature this year called the Wild Hunt! Players both new and old alike are invited and able to participate in the festivities! Here’s a list of some recent updates to the game: - Improvements the new craft parser, including better support for two-word names like "katana blade" or "work gloves". - Improved armor counter for crafted objects, specifically to fix certain issues with low-AC tower shields. - Some crafted weapons have been rebalanced. Southern-style weapons will typically have higher dierolls, but less hitroll and damroll. You should be able to make heavier two-handed weapons in most cases. - Groundwork has been laid for automating some of the minor repeatable events that happen every year. For example, the game will track how many Cinco de Mayo piñatas you kill for the current year, count how many years you've killed Cinco de Mayo piñatas, and maintain a running total of how many you've killed altogether. As a result of this effort, other events that we’ve run before may become regular annual occurrences. Progress continues with coding the upcoming level 40 thief skill ‘umbral thrall’. Thralls now work properly with bloodletting stab, trip, feint, flourish and flick. We still need program compatibility with backstab, skirmish, crippling strike, shadow strike, dirt throwing and knife throwing before implementing the skill.
