Alter Aeon December 2024 Update

Happy Holidays! Currently we are giving out our December Advent Calendar gifts. Make sure to log in every day to receive your gift. A free eqset has been added to the list of possible advent gifts. Also, there are trees are roaming across the world, which many say make great wood woads! Our Winter Solstice event will begin on December 21st and end on the morning of January 2nd. There will be a little something for everyone. There are package delivery cannons to shoot, teleporting mobs to kill, reindeer and new year’s mobs to possess in the PK arenas, plus the return of the Tower of Challenge and The Forest of Good Will Gathering and a whole lot more! We are near the culmination of the great equipment update, a project started summer of last year with the expansion of object compositions and continued this year with switching crafting over to a template system. You can now make objects using bonecraft, woodcraft, metallurgy, lapidary and leathercraft with the craft command. In addition, its parser, and that of most of the craft skills, has been updated to be more intuitive and natural. For example, if you want to forge a goblet from an iron ingot, you could type: “craft a goblet from this iron” or “forge a goblet with my iron” or “forge new goblet iron” or “forge goblet iron” ...or a dozen other variations as you find most comfortable. This natural language handling was also added to the tailoring command (but currently cannot tailor with the craft command due to differences in its parser). This new handling can also pick up on crafted objects with two words, such as “combat boots” or “evening gloves”. We plan on adding some modify the brew and build commands to work with natural language, as well. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Alter Aeon November 2024 Update

We are pleased to announce our next event: the Fall Festival, which will start on Wednesday, November 27th and will end 9AM server time on Sunday, December 1st. It is an event appropriate for players of all levels, both new and old alike. Among the various activities will be a carnival, a corn maze, a turkey shoot and special turkey-themed characters to play as in a PK arena. Last month we released two areas: - The Infernal Morass, a level 45 group 15 area. - The Rubiac Plain, a level 45 autogroup area. Both areas can be accessed through a portal in the City of Fonts on the plane of Purnima. Here are some highlights of last month’s updates: - A new object type: INSTRUMENT. - You can search brew recipes for ones that you submitted by using the “mine” keyword. - Attacks that knock down opponents are more likely to cause crippling. - A new 'jump' command has been added. This can be used in conjunction with certain attacks such as kick and stomp to do additional damage. - Six new music tracks added. In November, we will release a level 40 extraplanar area called Usha’s Dream. This will be accessed via Caer Bre’en. Work continues on the level 40 thief skill ‘umbral thrall’. The ‘flick’ skill is scheduled to be integrated with it next. Several more thief skills will have to be modified before adding it to the game. Alter Aeon October 2024 Update

Happy Harvest Season from the staff of Alter Aeon! One of biggest game events of the year starts at the end of the month. This year’s Halloween Havoc event will start on Wednesday, October 30th and will end at 9AM on Sunday, November 3rd. Event activities can be enjoyed by both new and old players alike. Among the many activities, there will be a costume contest! There will be two contests on Thursday, October 31st and two on Saturday, November 2nd. Exact times and details will be announced via the in-game event schedule. At the end of event we will be releasing the first of the level 45 group 15 zones for the Field of Fonts called the Infernal Morass. We will also be releasing a level 40 zone soon called the Dreamscape, which will be portal-linked to Caer Bre’en. Last month we released the Castle Ket, Hinterlands, and Winnowing Hall areas. Any bugs should be worked out, and all quests are functioning properly. Recently we have done extensive work on improving input/output for crafting in general. In particular, the assemble options have been optimized, virtually all lists can be searched by several categories such keywords, object type and wear location, and the full lists have abbreviated output, while listing a single entry gives all the information, which now includes what upgrades can be made to the item. Furthermore, if you know the ‘woodcraft’ skill, woods you gather will now be remembered by your character. Also, if you know the ‘lapidary’ skill, minerals you mine will now be remembered by your character. You can see and search these lists with “woodcraft list wood” and “lapidary list mineral” commands. Medallions can now be added to nearly any sort of crafted necklaces and collars. Numerous new craftable objects have been added, from sansetsukons to macuahuitls to aprons. We are working on some quality-of-life suggestions for the near future, including the option of listing directions for waypoints, level tweaks for certain daily tasks and some improvements to sleeping. Plans are in the works for a full-featured cooking guild before the end of the year. Work continues on ‘umbral thrall’, the upcoming level 40 thief skill. The thrall is functioning properly with the ‘trip’ and ‘bloodletting stab’. The plan to get it working with all other thief combat skills before implementing it. Alter Aeon September 2024 Update

Happy Fall, everyone! Our End-of-Summer concluded last week, and our next game event will be Halloween Havoc at the end of October. More details in next month’s update! The Port Crimsonia areas have been opened, which are level 42-43 zones located on the east side of the northern continent of Ramanek. The crafting conversion is almost complete. All the major crafts have been switched over to the new system. There are still some bugs and interfaces that are being worked on. A few old bugs were fished out, such as dragonscale coming up with the wrong article for certain colors. Some of the more notable additions are: - New crafted equipment have been added, ranging from chain armor, springbolts, dartcasters and nunchaku. - Forged armor is now assembled from components like weapons. The interface is still in flux to improve user-friendliness. - All crafting list commands have the same output, format and options, including being able to list individual entries, display keywords, and filter by object type or wear location. - Inlaying with bone is now done with bonecraft instead of lapidary. - You can now scrap PART type objects. - If you know the diamantaire skill, you can crush diamonds into powder that can be used in brews. Some upcoming additions include: - Being able to add medallions to any neck piece with an open gem slot. - Several more new objects. - As many crafted objects as possible will be retroactively updated to the new system. We’ll soon be releasing the following areas: - Castle Ket, a level 13 zone on the island of Kordan - The Hinterlands, a level 32 zone in western Atmir - Winnowing Hall, a level 15/32 demi-plane Also in the works is a level 45 autogroup area called the Infernal Morass that will be portal-linked to the City of Fonts. Coding continues for the level 40 thief skill ‘umbral thrall’. The plan right now is to get the combat routines working with the thrall first. After that it should be useful enough to implement the skill so players can use it. We’ll then work on the non-combat features like extra pick-pocketing, shadow blade retrieval, dual lock-picking and protective trap disarming. Alter Aeon August 2024 Update

Here’s the latest news about Alter Aeon! We will be running an “End of Summer” event the last weekend of the month, starting on Friday, August 30th and ending at noon on Monday, September 2nd. Port Crimsonia, a high level city located on the continent of Ramanek, will be opened at the end of the event. Here’s some updates from last month: - Casting ‘icebolt’ on yourself now creates several icy bolts that can be used as ammunition for crossbows. - If you know the ‘cooking’ skill, you should now to see the taste of herbs and food on identify and with lists with shopkeepers, donation, etc. You will also see if spell components qualify as culinary salt. - New level 23 warrior skill: brew warpaint. These paints have unique properties that interact with stunning, berserking, bleeding and warcry skills. - The Cauldron, a level 40 area featuring custom crafted equipment, in western Suboria is now open. Upcoming changes: - In August, you will be able to scrap studs, spikes and scales from non-metallic items to regain small amounts of metal. - If you know diamantaire, you will be able to grind up otherwise unbrewable mined diamonds to make high level spell components. - The crafting system is being streamlined to a template-based model. New craftable objects will become available, list interfaces will become more uniform and some pieces of equipment will gain new stats. These templates can be applied to builder-created objects as well. The game will recognize a goblet as a goblet whether it was forged, woodcrafted, lapidaried or built. This will allow a great deal of customization with certain equipment, and crafted components should become more common as random drops from treasure chests, shopkeepers and so forth. - Forged armor will be switching over to an assembly model like forged weapons. Individual components will be forged and then are put together to make various kinds of armor, including chain armor. - Castle Ket, the Hinterlands and Winnowing Hall are nearly completed. After a final rewrite of some long descriptions, we’ll be releasing these areas. Work has also started on ‘umbral thrall’, the future level 40 thief skill, although that won’t be done for some time. Hello and welcome to the July 2024 update! First of all, the Summer Solstice Celebration has been extended to Saturday, July 6th! That gives everyone more time to complete the challenges! In addition to event preparations, last month a new object type called CLOTHING was added for wearable items out there that don’t really qualify as armor in order to make them more compatible with certain crafting skills. Work continues on getting the ‘warpaints’ skill ready. This will be a brewing equivalent for the warrior class like potions, unguents, salves and tinctures. Building continues for a variety of different areas, several of which will be released after the conclusion of the Summer Solstice Celebration during the month of July. Alter Aeon June 2024 Update

Happy Summer! It is nearly time for this year’s Summer Solstice Celebration! This game-wide event is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 21st and end on Thursday, July 4th. We will be re-opening both the Puzzlewood and Starving Rock zones for the event. For those unfamiliar, the Puzzlewood is a high-level area intended to be completed by large groups where players are pitted against against waves of monsters that increase in strength with each successive wave. Starving Rock is an autolevelling zone where players try to kill as many monsters as possible and can be completed at any level. We’ll also be releasing another area, Castle Ket. This area is located on Kordan. Also upcoming are a new warpaints skill for the warrior class, a new level 40 area in western Suboria called “The Cauldron”, and a new object type called INSTRUMENT for musical instruments. Here are some updates from last month: - Changes to the bleeding effect. Living creatures can spontaneously start bleeding if they take enough damage in a short amount of time from pointed or edged attacks. Certain skills have a cumulative chance to start bleeding over multiple hits. Bleeding can still be started like normal from skills like ‘bloodletting stab’ or ‘moulinet’. - Sustained fire damage can start people on fire sometimes! It is not as powerful as a ‘fireweb’ or ‘flamestrike’ spell, however. - A new debuff: crippled. Primarily inflicted by blunt damage attacks, and, to a lesser degree, edged damage types. Crippled characters will experience a persistent drain on movement. Certain skills, such as ‘crippling strike’, can instantly cripple opponents. - The ‘defile’ skill was added for druids, which allows them to drain resources from a room and convert them into additional cast level for spells. - A new object type was added called FOCUS. A rough spellcasting analog of the WEAPON type, a FOCUS adds damage to most damaging spells based on its level. For more information, please refer to our latest Youtube update here:

Happy May, everybody! It’s time for the Alter Aeon May 2024 Update! Our game is always growing, and as such we have a number of areas currently in development. These include: - Castle Ket, a level 13 area for the island of Kordan - Winnowing Hall, a level 15 area - The Hinterlands, a level 32 area for the continent of Atmir - The Cauldron, a level 40 area for the continent of Suboria - Port Crimsonia, a level 43 zone for the continent of Ramanek This, of course, is addition to our ongoing maintenance of fixing typos, squashing bugs and improving new features, thanks to our dedicated team of developers! Plans are in the works a new bonus class, a ‘brew warpaints’ skill for the warrior class, changes to make damage types a little more interesting, and a level 38 ‘defile’ skill for druids. In June we will be having the Summer Solstice Celebration, one of our bigger game events of the year. More details will be forthcoming in next month’s update! Alter Aeon April 2024 Update

Happy Spring, everybody! Here is what has been happening in Alter Aeon lately: Two new level 40 zones for were released in March, the Valmor Mine mini-area and the Salt Pan wilderness area. Both are located on the continent of Suboria between Elborat and the City of Kings. Because of the level cap raising to level 40 a few months ago, builders have been working to increase the supply of high level content, so we can expect more high level areas in the future. We released the level 40 ‘call legendary raptor’ skill and its support skill, ‘bird call’, last month as well, which gives druids access to flying minions with unique abilities. Furthermore, we will be adding the ‘defile’ skill soon, which will give druids a casting technique akin to channel casting for mages or blood-casting for necromancers. Since its function was folded into the ‘berserk’ skill, the ‘bloodquench’ skill was deprecated and replaced with a new warrior skill called ‘clobber’. This skill is only usable while berserking and it is particularly effective against stunned or unbalanced opponents. Plans are in the works for the level 40 thief skill, which will be called ‘umbral thrall’. As implied by the name, this will be the capstone shadow skill. Some minor tweaks have been made over the past month to improve the hunting. We are looking into adding hunting-specific jobs. For more information please refer our latest Youtube update here:

Alter Aeon March 2024 Update

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s almost time for the Alter Aeon Spring Festival event! You can expect event quests, leprechauns and a whole lot of fun. This year’s spring event will be held over the Easter weekend. The hunting command should now be unlocked! Like fishing, it is a mini-game that can be used untrained. The Monday snipe hunt mini-event has been integrated into hunting, as was originally intended. The ‘animal magnetism’ skill has been folded into the ‘calm animal’ skill. A new level 23 druid skill will be released soon, which will be a prerequisite for the level 40 druid skill. If you knew ‘animal magnetism’, you will automatically know the new skill. There is a new level 40 necromancer skill: bind demon. For the price of a purple or higher soulstone, zombies, ghouls and mummies can have a demon bound to them. This gives them increased strength, dexterity and constitution, resistance to fire (or decreased vulnerability to it) and increased attack speed. They gain the DEMON type, making them resistant to good-aligned attackers, but vulnerable to certain abilities that affect demons. Related to the above, there was some cleanup to the summon demon subparser menu, see 'summon demon help'. Aspects have been modified to be the game’s only no-melee minion. Daily tasks have been altered. You only have to complete 3, but they are predetermined for you each day. You will generally get 2 easier tasks and 1 more difficult one. Several new tasks have been added, many based on class abilities. The game will not assign you tasks if you do not know the skills or spells to complete. These range from stealing a soul to shoplifting to completing a warrior combination to carving a totem. Numerous areas have had their levels adjusted around the mainland of Atmir and Suboria. Offshore areas are being made group zones, save for a handful of isolated pockets of tougher zones such as the Ash Desert, Minetown and the Ashborian Plateau. Former group areas are being changed into autogroup zones wherever possible. We are working on a plan to convert all of Ramanek to level 44, while increasing level 42 content on Suboria and adding new level 40 content. Plans are in the works for expanding level 43 content in a new landmass east of the Dragon Empire's holdings. The Fathomless Bathysphere is now level 45 autogroup, and attached via a reinforced Font in a new room to the City of Fonts. Alter Aeon February 2024 Update

We have just raised the level cap to 40! Along with the level raise, three new level 40 abilities have been released and more are on the way: - For mages, ‘greater crystal elemental’, which gives you a big tanky crystal elemental that casts ‘crystal spear’. - For clerics, ‘chaos hammer’, a direct damage spell that uses spirit hammers for increased damage and has strange, chaotic side effects. - For warriors, ‘spinning kick’, a slow but powerful unarmed combat skill that does its most impressive damage to opponents that are stunned or unbalanced. - The new level 40 necromancer skill, ‘bind demon’, will be coming in next few weeks. This summoning ritual will allow players to convert their undead minions into more powerful creatures. - Plans are underway for the level 40 thief skill, tentatively called ‘dark servant’. As far as programming is concerned, this skill will be fairly complicated so it will take some time to complete. - A few ideas are being floated for level 40 druid, including unique summons or alternative casting. Expect more information in our next update! Here are some more updates from last month, starting with changes to warrior skills: - Hand-to-hand combat skills do somewhat less damage, but will more quickly stun opponents. - High damage stomps can remove a target's temporary immunity to being unbalanced. - ‘Pommel strike’ is somewhat less effective at stunning opponents. - Warrior power attacks effectiveness against dazed or stunned opponents has been strengthened. - The ‘lunge’ skill now can drive back unbalanced opponents, similar to (but not as powerful) as knockback, lagging their attacks for a brief time. Changes to cleric spells: - ‘Clasp of corruption’ can longer be groupcast, but it costs less mana. - ‘Hold undead’ costs a bit more mana and is a bit slower. - ‘Know alignment’ can detect ward good and ward evil when cast on a room. - ‘Condemnation’ does less damage, but lingers as a curse that greatly reduces how well cleric healing spells work on the target. - Aspects were re-balanced to better serve their intended function. Alter Aeon recently released two new areas: - Tartarus, the Realm of Hades, a level 45 instanced area, is now open. This area features numerous multi-staged fights against the imprisoned Primordial Titans. - The Ralnoth Guilds Mining Cooperative is a level 30 area, the first constructed by new builders Seren and Nidari. Future plans: - The ‘hunting’ skill will be released in February! This long-awaited feature will add another skill-based mini-game for players to enjoy along with a new way of collecting resources and experience using ranged weapons. - More hints strings being added to spells that lack them. - Some high level sectors will be getting a level boost to accommodate the level cap raise. - Adjustments to top tier equipment in many high level areas. - A big change to the ‘expiation’ spell is planned to make it more useful and take advantage of favor. - Work continues on the Castle Ket and Port Crimsonia areas. Alter Aeon January 2024 Update

Hello and happy New Year! Our Winter Solstice event is now concluded, but we have another game event coming up soon! Our next event will our 29th anniversary event! This is a celebration of when Alter Aeon first went public on January 15th, 1995. Dates are still tentative, but right now we are scheduled to commence on January 13th and conclude on the 27th. There will be at least one museum area that will be opened, and we will likely have the 1995 version port available for those who want to see what life was like on Alter Aeon when it began. In December: - Debut of the Frost Knight bonus class. This unique bonus class is focused around defense, with the ability to create powerful protective armor, heal injuries and gain resistance to cold and chilling effects, using gathered snowballs as a medium. - More objects to spawn with increased quality but unaltered stats. - A slew of composition updates, with refinements to brewing acid and cartridge recipes. - Brewed acids can now be used to break down certain materials into new spell components and to concentrate ores, increasing their yield while reducing their mass. - A new geology: glacial. This geology will favored ice-based and cold affinity materials, but lacks fire or lightning based ones. - Expanded interactions when insulting or using negative socials on mobs, including priests of your god disfavoring you, guards fining you and children crying from your merciless verbal take-downs. Insults can be refined into several categories: choleric, melancholic, phlegmatic and sanguine. 1. “Choleric” insults call out a character's integrity and temperament. 2. “Melancholic” insults belittle a character's intelligence and mettle. 3. “Phlegmatic” insults degrade a character's hygiene and fitness. 4. “Sanguine” insults question a character's sobriety and virtue. Here are our coding goals for 2024: - Raising the maximum player level to 40! This expansion will usher in a handful of new abilities, with some available right away and more developed over the course of the year. - Implementation of the hunting skill. Players will be able to track, ambush, pursue, bait and trap prey. - A compliment generator in time for Valentine's Day. The hope is to make this work with our player feature system, so players can compliment another player's emerald eyes or raven locks. - Warpaint brewing skill for warriors, in the barbarian blood skillgroup. - An etching skill that will use brewed acids to add a random effect to objects with open inlay slots. - Altered strings to druidic called animals on other planes, to emphasize their altered stats. - Baking as an off-shoot of cooking. Make tarts, quiches, cobblers and more! Here are some areas we expect to open in 2024: - Castle Ket, a level 13 area located on the island of Kordan. The project includes additional two more former event areas: the Hinterlands, a level 32 area on Atmir, and Winnowing Hall. The latter will be an experimental area designed to handle both low-level and mid-level players, presenting different challenges and quests depending on your character’s level. - Port Crimsonia, a level 43 area located on the continent of Ramanek. This large and sophisticated city area has been in development for a couple years. - The final installment of the Realm of Hades, called the Pits of Tartarus, will be finished soon.
